The term SMART IEPs describes goals that are specific, measurable, use action words, are realistic and relevant, and are time-limited.

SMART stands for:
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Use Action Words
R – Realistic and Relevant
T – Time-Limited

Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are developed based on evaluations and data about your child’s educational challenges. From this information, IEP goals are created. These goals are an important way for the IEP team to determine whether your child is making progress during the year.

This SMART Goals training focuses on how families can work as part of the IEP team to create goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-oriented, and Time-bound. Having SMART IEP goals can help your child get the most out of special education by using realistic goals that ensure your child receives the support needed at school.

We will also discuss common pitfalls to avoid, such as:
• Goals that are set too low or too high
• Goals based on insufficient data
• Goals that do not clearly address how a disability affects access to education

This workshop supports families in understanding their role in the IEP process under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

If CARES CPRC can support your family in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support families — whether you are new to CARES or would like to reconnect with a staff member who has helped you before. 🤝
